Tilburg is getting excited for the Eneco Tour
In the run-up to the Eneco Tour time trial, Tilburg is not only focused on this major sporting event, but also on introducing the city to the sport of cycling. To introduce children to cycling, two Ready2Race School Clinic days are being organized on the cycling course of the Tilburg sports club TWC Pijnenburg.
The Ready2Race School Clinics were developed by Team Visma | Lease a Bike to introduce young people to cycling in an accessible and safe way. During the clinic days, various groups of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from Reeshof visit the cycling course. During school hours, they get to experience the sport of cycling in a fun and safe way.
What do the clinics look like?
During the clinics, students first receive an introduction to cycling and the Ready2Race program. They then learn more about the differences between a road bike and a regular bike, and attention is paid to safety. Such as wearing a helmet correctly, proper riding posture, and braking technique. The road bikes and helmets are brought along in the Ready2Race bus specifically for the clinics.
For many children, this is their first time riding a road bike. That’s why the clinics start with simple exercises to help them get comfortable with the bike and their riding posture. This is followed by technical skills, such as steering, slaloming, and reaching for a water bottle while riding. This introduces the students to aspects of the sport that also play an important role at the competitive level.
Social impact through elite sports
These activities make the Eneco Tour more than just a sporting event. The time trial brings international elite sports to Tilburg, while the school clinics offer young people the opportunity to experience the sport for themselves. In this way, the city demonstrates how a major cycling event can contribute to the enjoyment of sports, talent development, and an active lifestyle among young residents.
At the end of the clinics, students are informed about opportunities to continue cycling with a club and are invited to attend the Eneco Tour time trial. In this way, the transition from spectating to participating forms an important part of the preparations for the event.
